Rock Point is a nature lover’s dream. The day we bought the cottage, a large turtle was spotted on the beach. Every day since then, something new has been spotted, a family of loons, deer, Painted Turtles, Blue Jays. During a long weekend in early November 2009, we arrived to a family of otters swimming past the point and, over the following three days, watched as the lake gradually froze over until it was a solid sheet of ice.
In the months to come, Rock Point became base camp for an ice fishing ‘expedition’ on Blue Hawk Lake (which really amounted to drilling holes about 150 feet of the dock…), hours of snowshoeing across the marsh around the bend, and walks on the frozen lake under the stars.

If you’re someone who likes being active on your vacation, there’s a lot do on the lake and in the vicinity to keep yourself busy. Just a quick list….
- Quiet water kayaking/canoeing with Burnt River access for miles of exploring – we’ve had a LOT of fun doing this. While a motorized boat is not provided for our guests, there is a canoe as well as two kayaks and a paddleboat for quiet water exploration. At the North side of the lake the Burnt River enters and then exits. Paddle a kilometre up the winding inlet and you’ll find the waterfall - a great place to bring a lunch. Or you can exit the lake through the river’s outlet, paddling with the gentle current for hours (just keep in mind you’ll have to paddle back…!);
- Miles of hiking and x-country ski trails – both around the cottage itself and on marked trails around the Haliburton region;
- Fishing/ice-fishing (Bass,Pickeral, Perch,Musky) – Blue Hawk Lake has proven to be a great fishing lake;
- Take in lots of natural wildlife – walking through the woods, or simply staying put on the deck or dock;
- Swimming – it’s a very clean lake and the swimming is great.
- In the winter, check out the skiing at Sir Sam’s Ski Resort just 30 minutes away. Snowshoeing on the lake is also a great treat, or you can tobaggon down the boatlaunch to the lake.
…and speaking of boatlaunch…
There is one on the property, and plenty of room at the dock for those fishermen interested in bringing their boats with them.

The boatlaunch is steep, however (which is why it makes for great sledding in the winter), so a 4×4 is definately required. We also ask that boats be thoroughly cleaned before entering the water. Blue Hawk Lake is a smaller, healthy and clean lake, with no invasive species – it’s important that we protect it…
